DELO KATIOBOND Cationic UV and Light Curing Epoxy Adhesives
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives are single-component, epoxy-based UV and light-curing adhesives that cure via cationic polymerisation when exposed to UV light at 320–400nm or visible light at 400–550nm, and continue curing after the light source is removed (a property known as dark cure), allowing complete polymerisation in shadowed areas without a secondary heat or humidity step.
What is Cationic Polymerisation?
Most light-curing adhesives use free-radical polymerisation, where the curing reaction stops the moment the light source is removed. Cationic polymerisation works differently.
When UV or visible light activates the photoinitiator in a DELO KATIOBOND adhesive, it releases a catalyst that drives the polymerisation reaction forward and keeps driving it even in complete darkness. This is what gives DELO KATIOBOND its dark cure property.
The practical benefits of cationic polymerisation in DELO KATIOBOND include:
- Dark cure: the adhesive continues curing after the light source is removed, without any secondary heat or humidity step
- Shadow zone coverage: full polymerisation in areas with no direct light access, including beneath bonded components, inside potted assemblies, and behind opaque substrates
- Tack-free surface finish: cured surfaces are dry and dust-free, unlike some free-radical systems where oxygen inhibition leaves a tacky outer layer
- Single-component processing: no mixing required, with extended shelf life prior to light activation

Excellent Chemical and Temperature Resistance
The adhesives have good temperature resistance, up to 180ºC, and excellent chemical resistance, making them ideal for automotive and harsh environment use. The epoxies are dry to touch after cure (no oxygen inhibition occurs), are one-part, and cure at room temperature.
Ideal for Electronic Applications
Cured products exhibit low shrinkage, resulting in low stress on delicate devices. Low water absorption and very low ionic content make them ideal for electronic applications.
What is the Pre-Activation Process?
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives support a pre-activation process, which gives production lines greater flexibility when bonding complex or opaque assemblies.
In pre-activation, the adhesive is exposed to visible light before the components are joined. This initiates the cationic curing reaction and gives the adhesive a defined open time, during which the components can be accurately positioned and brought together. After joining, a short secondary light exposure of around 10 seconds achieves initial handling strength, with full cure completing at room temperature without further irradiation.
Pre-activation is particularly useful where:
- The bond area will be completely obscured once the components are joined, preventing any post-assembly light exposure
- Precise component placement is required before the adhesive begins to cure
- Production cycle times need to remain short without relying on a batch oven or humidity chamber for secondary cure

DELO KATIOBOND Applications
DELO KATIOBOND cationic light-cured epoxy adhesives are used across a range of industries where dark cure, high temperature resistance, and low shrinkage are required in a single-component system.

Electronics and PCB Assembly
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives are used in electronic component assembly for bonding and securing SMDs, PCB potting, and wire tacking. Low shrinkage and low ionic content reduce mechanical stress on sensitive components and minimise the risk of electrochemical migration on populated boards.
RFID and Smart Card Manufacturing
In RFID and smart card assembly, DELO KATIOBOND adhesives bond and encapsulate antenna elements and chip modules to card substrates. The dark cure property ensures full polymerisation beneath bonded layers that block direct UV exposure, removing the need for a secondary cure step in the production process.
Automotive Electronics and Harsh Environments
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives are used in automotive electronics, including sensor sealing, coil bonding, and camera assembly. Temperature resistance up to 180°C and chemical resistance to automotive fluids make them suitable for under-bonnet and other harsh environment applications, where long-term reliability under thermal cycling is required.
Opto-Electronics
In opto-electronic assembly, DELO KATIOBOND adhesives bond and align optical components, where dimensional stability after cure is critical to performance. Very low volumetric shrinkage under cure prevents misalignment of precision-positioned parts, maintaining the optical path integrity of the finished assembly.

Potting and Encapsulation
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives in higher viscosity grades, up to 180,000 mPa.s, are used for potting and encapsulation of electronic assemblies. The dark cure property allows full polymerisation inside enclosed housings where light access is limited or impossible after assembly.

FAQs
What is the dark cure or shadow cure property of DELO KATIOBOND?
When visible light activates a DELO KATIOBOND adhesive, it triggers a catalyst through cationic polymerisation that continues driving the curing reaction even after the light source is removed. This means the adhesive fully cures in shadow zones, beneath bonded components, and inside enclosed assemblies without requiring a secondary heat or humidity cure step.
What viscosity grades does DELO KATIOBOND come in?
DELO KATIOBOND adhesives are available in viscosities from 1,300 to 180,000 mPa.s. Lower viscosity grades are suited to fine dispensing, capillary flow, and thin bond line applications. Higher viscosity grades are used for gasketing, dam-and-fill, and potting applications where the adhesive needs to hold its shape before cure.

What is the difference between DELO KATIOBOND and DELO PHOTOBOND?
DELO KATIOBOND uses cationic epoxy chemistry, which gives it dark cure capability, temperature resistance up to 180°C, and a tack-free surface finish. DELO PHOTOBOND uses free-radical acrylate chemistry, which delivers faster cure speeds, optical clarity, and high flexibility, making it better suited to glass bonding, display assembly, and optical applications where transparency is required.
What is the difference between DELO KATIOBOND and DELO DUALBOND for shadow zone applications?
DELO KATIOBOND achieves shadow cure through its cationic chemistry alone. Once light-activated, the catalyst continues curing the adhesive at room temperature with no further input. DELO DUALBOND uses a secondary heat or humidity cure to complete polymerisation in shadow zones. DELO KATIOBOND is the better fit where no secondary cure step is available in the production process.
What temperature resistance does DELO KATIOBOND offer?
DELO KATIOBOND cationic epoxy adhesives offer temperature resistance up to 180°C, making them suitable for automotive under-bonnet applications, sensor sealing, and other assemblies that experience sustained high temperatures or repeated thermal cycling in service.
