What is DELO-PUR?

DELO-PUR is a range of two-component polyurethane adhesives that cure at room temperature through a chemical reaction between a resin and a hardener. Unlike rigid epoxy systems, cured polyurethane adhesives retain elasticity, allowing the bond line to absorb mechanical movement, vibration and impact loading without cracking or delaminating from the substrate.

The range includes standard polyurethane grades and MS polymer grades (modified silane polymers) that cure through a different chemical mechanism but offer flexible properties comparable to silicone adhesives whilst providing higher structural strength than a moisture-cured silicone system.

Polyurethane Adhesives are Versatile

They can be used in temperatures from –40ºC to +100°C and have excellent chemical stability.

Polyurethanes can be used in almost any layer thickness.

Polyurethane adhesives can take on structural tasks such as securing components on printed circuit boards or bonding housings.

Supplied for Smaller or Larger Volumes

The Polyurethane adhesives are available in 50 & 200ml DELO Side-by-Side double cartridges, and in 25Kg drums for larger volume applications.

Manual & pneumatic dispense guns for the DELO Side-by-Side cartridges are also available.

Advantages of Flexible Polyurethane Adhesives

Polyurethane adhesives cure to a tough-elastic structure that accommodates differential movement between bonded materials without loss of adhesion. This flexibility prevents the brittleness and cracking that rigid epoxy systems can experience under thermal cycling or dynamic loading.

Where assemblies operate under vibration, impact, or repeated mechanical stress, polyurethane adhesives absorb energy through the flexibility of the cured bond line rather than transferring it to the substrate. This makes them suited to applications where the bonded materials have different thermal expansion coefficients, or where the joint will experience sustained dynamic loads in service.

Additional benefits include:

  • Flexibility and elongation without loss of structural bond strength
  • Absorption of impact and dynamic loads without cracking or delamination
  • Accommodation of differential thermal movement between dissimilar materials
  • Cure in any layer thickness without oven or UV lamp requirement
  • Mineral-filled grades filling large or uneven bond gaps without slumping before cure
  • Protective potting of electronics and sensor assemblies without transmitting stress to component leads

Flexible Structural Bonding and Impact-Resistant Applications

DELO-PUR polyurethane adhesives are specified in structural bonding applications where a cold-cure flexible bond is required alongside impact resistance and accommodation of differential thermal movement between dissimilar substrates.

For bonding assemblies where substrates have different coefficients of thermal expansion, such as metal-to-plastic or composite-to-metal joints, DELO-PUR accommodates repeated thermal cycling without the cracking that rigid epoxy systems experience. The tough, elastic cured material distributes stress across the full bond area throughout the service life of the assembly.

In applications subject to impact, shock or sustained vibration, DELO-PUR polyurethane adhesives absorb energy through the flexibility of the cured bond line, making them suited to ultra-fast deceleration applications and assemblies in industrial equipment, automotive electronics and mechanical engineering where dynamic loading is a primary design consideration.

DELO-PUR adhesives also secure precision mechanical components and printed circuit board assemblies, where the adhesive takes on a structural role within the assembly and contributes to overall structural integrity. The range can be applied in any layer thickness and functions as a construction-carrying element.

Key characteristics include:

  • Flexible bond line accommodating differential thermal movement between dissimilar materials
  • Energy absorption under impact and dynamic loading without transmitting stress to substrates
  • Very high impact resistance for ultra-fast deceleration and shock applications
  • Structural integrity contribution in precision mechanical assemblies
  • Cure in any layer thickness supporting design flexibility

Potting, Encapsulation and Specialist Applications

DELO-PUR polyurethane adhesives are used for potting and encapsulating electronic assemblies, PCB-mounted components and sensor housings where the flexible cured material must protect against vibration, thermal cycling and chemical exposure without transmitting mechanical stress to solder joints or component leads. Room temperature cure eliminates the need for batch oven processing, and the range includes grades tested to ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity and meeting UL94 HB flammability requirements for electronics assemblies with specific safety certifications.

Mineral-filled DELO-PUR grades are used for bonding housings, covers and enclosures where bond gaps exceed 2mm or where surface irregularities create uneven joint geometry. High run-resistance prevents slumping before cure, and the flexible cured material accommodates movement between bonded components under thermal or mechanical load.

Selected DELO-PUR grades are qualified to AIMS 10-04-001 for aircraft interior assembly, covering structural bonding of interior components, including panels, housings and fittings. Beige mineral-filled grades are available where colour matching to aircraft interior finishes is required alongside structural performance.

Key characteristics include:

  • Protection of sensitive electronics and sensor housings without stress transmission to component leads
  • Large gap-filling with high run-resistance in housings and enclosures
  • Flexible cured material accommodating component movement under thermal or mechanical load
  • Aircraft interior qualification to AIMS 10-04-001 with colour-matched grades available
  • Cure without oven requirement in any layer thickness

How Polyurethane Adhesives Work in Bonding and Potting

Manufacturers use polyurethane adhesives when they require flexible structural bonds that accommodate thermal movement, impact resistance, or potting applications where rigid cured materials would transmit stress to sensitive components or crack under dynamic loading.

DELO-PUR cures through a chemical reaction between resin and hardener that begins on mixing at room temperature. No UV lamp, heat source or specific substrate is required to trigger polymerisation. Initial handling strength of 1 to 2 MPa develops within 10 minutes, allowing partial handling and repositioning before full cure. Full strength of up to 20 MPa develops after 24 hours at room temperature, with heat available to accelerate the cure process where production cycle times require it.

The cured polyurethane structure combines structural bond strength with a degree of elasticity. This flexibility allows the bond line to absorb mechanical movement, vibration and impact loading without cracking or delaminating from the substrate. Mineral-filled formulations with high run-resistance support gap-filling in large or uneven joint geometries.

Key characteristics include:

  • Room temperature polymerisation triggered by mixing, with no external energy source required
  • Flexible cured structure combining structural strength with elasticity
  • Initial handling strength within 10 minutes supporting partial handling and repositioning
  • Full strength development after 24 hours, accelerable by applied heat
  • Energy absorption through bond line flexibility rather than rigid structure

What is the difference between DELO-PUR and DELO-DUOPOX for structural bonding?

DELO-PUR cures to a tough-elastic bond combining structural strength with flexibility and impact resistance, making it suited to assemblies under dynamic or impact loading and joints between dissimilar materials with different thermal expansion coefficients. DELO-DUOPOX cures to a rigid, high-strength solid better suited to structural joints requiring maximum load-bearing capacity and temperature resistance up to 180°C where flexibility is not a requirement.

What is the difference between DELO-PUR and DELO-GUM for potting applications?

DELO-PUR is a two-component structural polyurethane that cures through mixing and offers higher bond strength and better structural performance than a moisture-cured silicone system. DELO-GUM cures through atmospheric moisture alone to a permanently flexible elastomer, and is better suited to potting applications where the primary requirement is long-term flexibility, weathering resistance and protection of sensitive electronics without any mixing step in the production process.

What are MS polymer grades in the DELO-PUR range?

MS polymer grades are modified silane polymers that offer flexible properties comparable to silicone adhesives, whilst providing higher structural strength than a moisture-cured silicone system. They differ from standard polyurethane grades in their cure mechanism and mechanical characteristics, and are suited to applications requiring higher elongation and flexibility than a standard polyurethane grade can deliver.
