DELO PHOTOBOND UV and Light Curing Acrylate Adhesives

DELO PHOTOBOND covers acrylate-based adhesives that cure within seconds of UV or visible light exposure, producing optically clear, tack-free bonds with minimal shrinkage. The range serves applications in architectural glass, display manufacturing, medical devices, LED packaging, and consumer wearables across viscosities from 60 to 210,000 mPa.s.

What is a UV-Cured Acrylate Adhesive?

Acrylate adhesives cure through free-radical polymerisation. When UV or visible light hits the photoinitiator in the adhesive, it generates free radicals that trigger rapid cross-linking across the adhesive film. The reaction is fast, typically reaching handling strength within seconds of light exposure, and stops when the light source is removed.

This on-demand curing behaviour is what makes acrylate adhesives well-suited to high-speed production processes. The adhesive stays liquid and workable until the moment light is applied, giving operators time to position components accurately before committing to the bond.

Key features of DELO PHOTOBOND UV-cured acrylates include:

  • Optical clarity: many formulations cure water-clear, making them suitable for display bonding, glass assembly, and optical applications where the adhesive joint must remain invisible
  • Fast cure speed: handling strength achieved in seconds under UV or visible light, supporting short cycle times in automated production
  • Substrate versatility: reliable adhesion to glass, plastic, metal, and ceramic without priming in most applications
  • Formulation range: products available from highly flexible grades with elongation up to 390% through to hard, high-strength structural formulations
  • Biocompatibility: selected grades carry USP Class VI certification and meet ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity, supporting use in medical device manufacturing

DELO PHOTOBOND Applications

DELO PHOTOBOND UV and light-curing acrylate adhesives serve a wide range of bonding and sealing applications where optical clarity, fast cure speed, and strong adhesion to glass and transparent substrates are the primary requirements.

Shower Hinge with Shower Head

Architectural and Decorative Glass Bonding

The PHOTOBOND GB sub-range is formulated specifically for glass-to-glass and glass-to-metal bonding in architectural and decorative applications. GB-series adhesives are UV-resistant and weatherproof, making them suitable for exterior facade elements, structural glass joints, shower enclosures, and decorative hardware where the bond line must remain clear and stable over time. Viscosities range from 60 to 5,700 mPa.s across the sub-range, covering both low-viscosity capillary flow applications and thicker structural joints.

Display Assembly and Cover Glass Bonding

The PHOTOBOND LA sub-range uses light activation followed by humidity curing, giving it the ability to bond opaque or non-transparent substrates where a purely UV-cured system cannot reach the full bond area. LA-series adhesives are used in display integration, cover glass bonding, and LiDAR assembly, with very low glass transition temperatures, maintaining flexibility across a wide operating temperature range.

Optical Component Assembly and LED Packaging

The PHOTOBOND OB sub-range is optimised for active alignment of optical components, where low outgassing, stability against yellowing, and consistent curing shrinkage are required to maintain optical path integrity after assembly. OB-series adhesives are used in exterior and interior lighting, LED packaging, and camera lens assembly, with selected grades meeting NASA outgassing requirements.

Structural Joining of Glass and Metal

The PHOTOBOND SJ sub-range covers structural bonding of glass to metal and glass to plastic, where higher bond strengths are required than a standard glass bonding grade provides. SJ-series adhesives are used in precision engineering, consumer electronics, and industrial assembly, with viscosities from 6,000 to 90,000 mPa.s across the range.

Adhesives for LED Assembly
Adhesives for Medical Devices

Medical Device Manufacturing

Selected DELO PHOTOBOND grades carry USP Class VI certification and meet ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity, supporting their use in medical device bonding and sealing applications. Grades meeting ISO 10993-10 for skin sensitisation and ISO 10993-23 for skin irritation are also available, covering a broader range of medical and wearable device requirements.

Gasketing and Sealing

The PHOTOBOND SL sub-range covers cure-in-place gasket applications, with viscosities up to 210,000 mPa.s, producing formed-in-place seals on housings, enclosures, and covers. Selected grades meet ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity, extending their use into medical and wearable device sealing.

FAQs

What substrates do DELO PHOTOBOND adhesives bond to?

DELO PHOTOBOND acrylate adhesives bond to glass, metal, plastic, and ceramic substrates. Specific grades are formulated for glass-to-glass, glass-to-metal, and glass-to-plastic joints, with high humidity resistance and peel strength available across the range. For bonding to non-transparent or opaque substrates, the light-activated LA sub-range uses humidity as a secondary cure mechanism to complete the bond where UV light cannot reach the full joint area.

How quickly do DELO PHOTOBOND adhesives cure?

DELO PHOTOBOND adhesives reach handling strength within seconds of UV or visible light exposure. Cure speed depends on the light source intensity, wavelength, and the adhesive grade selected. Inseto can advise on compatible DELOLUX curing lamps and recommend the appropriate light dose for your specific application and production cycle time.

Adhesives for Medical Diagnostic Applications

Are any DELO PHOTOBOND grades suitable for medical devices?

Yes. Several DELO PHOTOBOND grades carry USP Class VI certification and meet ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity. Grades meeting ISO 10993-10 for skin sensitisation and ISO 10993-23 for skin irritation are also available. Inseto can provide full certification documentation for relevant grades on request.

What is the difference between DELO PHOTOBOND and DELO KATIOBOND?

DELO PHOTOBOND uses free-radical acrylate chemistry, delivering fast cure speeds, optical clarity, and high flexibility. It is best suited to glass bonding, optical assembly, display manufacturing, and medical applications. DELO KATIOBOND uses cationic epoxy chemistry, giving it dark cure capability and temperature resistance up to 180°C, making it better suited to electronics, automotive, and potting applications where shadow zones or high operating temperatures are a factor.

What is the difference between DELO PHOTOBOND and DELO DUALBOND?

DELO PHOTOBOND grades cure fully through UV or visible light exposure alone. DELO DUALBOND uses a secondary heat or humidity cure to complete polymerisation in shadow zones and complex assemblies. PHOTOBOND is the better fit for applications with full light access to the bond area and where optical clarity or biocompatibility is a requirement.
