A modular architecture, allows users to customise setups with a wide range of accessories including objective lenses, light bases, eyepieces, and camera adapters. This flexibility ensures that each system can be tailored to specific tasks, from basic visual inspection to advanced image analysis using Nikon’s NIS-Elements software.

Nikon’s Optical Designs

Nikon’s stereo zoom microscopes are available in two distinct optical designs: parallel optical path (CMO) and Greenough design, each tailored to different inspection needs.

The parallel optical path models, such as the SMZ25 and SMZ18, feature a shared main objective lens that delivers superior resolution, brightness, and compatibility, with advanced accessories like beam splitters and coaxial illuminators. These systems are ideal for high-end inspection applications including fluorescence imaging, digital documentation, and materials analysis.

In contrast, the Greenough design models, such as the SMZ1270i, SMZ800N, SMZ745, SMZ445, and legacy SMZ-2, use two angled optical paths to provide strong depth perception and a rugged, compact build. These microscopes are well-suited for routine inspections, production line use, and educational environments.

What is a Stereo Zoom Microscope?

A stereo zoom microscope, also known as a stereoscopic or dissecting microscope, is a type of optical microscope designed for low magnification observation of solid specimens, providing a three-dimensional (3D) view of the sample.

Unlike compound microscopes, which use a single optical path and are suited for applications requiring higher inspection magnifications, stereo microscopes feature two separate optical paths, each with its own objective lens and eyepiece. This setup delivers slightly different viewing angles to each eye, creating a stereoscopic effect that allows users to perceive depth and surface detail.

Stereo zoom microscopes typically offer magnification ranges from 10x to 50x, though some advanced models can go higher. The “zoom” function enables continuous magnification adjustment, allowing users to smoothly transition from a wide field of view to a close-up of specific details without changing lenses.

These microscopes use reflected (incident) light rather than transmitted light, making them ideal for examining opaque or thick specimens such as circuit boards, fossils, insects, and mechanical components. Some models also support transmitted light for viewing semi-transparent samples.

Thanks to their long working distance, stereo zoom microscopes are widely used in fields like:

  • Microsurgery and precision assembly
  • Electronics and PCB inspection
  • Jewellery and watch repair
  • Biological dissection
  • Forensics and materials science
