X-ray Inspection and CT Equipment by Nikon
Nikon’s X-ray and CT systems are engineered for precision, flexibility, and high-throughput x-ray inspection across industries such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, and medical devices. At the heart of these systems are Nikon’s proprietary Xi microfocus X-ray sources, which offer submicron resolution and integrated high-voltage generators, eliminating the need for bulky cables and reducing maintenance.
The XT V Series, including the XT V 130 and XT V 160, is tailored for electronics inspection and failure analysis. These systems feature:
- Transmission targets with automatic defocusing and multiple vacuum-sealed positions for optimal imaging.
- Open tube design with user-replaceable tungsten filament cups, allowing fast filament changes and lower operating costs.
- Advanced manipulators with 5-axis control, 360° rotation, and up to 72° tilt, enabling detailed inspection from multiple angles.
- High-resolution detectors such as the Varex PaxScan 2520DX, supporting up to 2,046× magnification
Nikon’s systems also support automated inspection workflows, including programmable routines and CT-ready configurations. The Inspect-X software enables intuitive control, defect analysis, and HTML reporting, while features like X.Tract allow virtual microsections without physical slicing
For inspecting larger or more complex components, Nikon’s VOXLS Series offers scalable CT systems with dual-source configurations (up to 450 kV), robotic automation readiness, and metrology-grade manipulators. These systems support advanced scan modes such as Panel Shift CT, Tilted CT, and Pixel Split CT, making them ideal for high-end manufacturing and R&D environments.
X-ray Inspection Applications:
- Electronics: BGA inspection, solder joint integrity, bond-wire analysis.
- Medical Devices: Miniaturised component inspection, failure analysis.
- Automotive & Aerospace: Porosity analysis, dimensional verification, CAD comparison.
- Additive Manufacturing: Internal structure validation, topology optimisation.
Subcontract X-ray Inspection and CT Services:
Nikon also offers subcontract inspection services, providing expert-led CT scanning for one-off or batch jobs, supporting product development, quality control, and failure analysis across diverse sectors

Further Information
What is X-ray Inspection?
X-ray inspection is a non-destructive testing method that uses X-rays to examine the internal structure of objects without damaging them. It’s commonly used in industries like electronics, aerospace, automotive, and medical devices to detect hidden defects such as cracks, voids, misalignments, or soldering issues.
In practice, X-ray inspection systems generate high-energy beams that penetrate materials and produce images based on how different densities absorb the rays. Advanced systems, like those from Nikon, can offer real-time imaging, computed tomography (CT) for 3D views, and automated defect recognition, making them ideal for quality control, failure analysis, and research applications.
