What is a Compound Semiconductor Wafer?

A compound semiconductor wafer is a substrate made from materials that combine two or more elements. These wafer types are increasingly being used to manufacture photonic, quantum, and high-power semiconductor devices.

Key Features of Compound Semiconductor Wafers

Delivering high performance Compound Semiconductor Wafers

Inseto supplies an extensive range of compound semiconductor wafer materials, including Silicon Carbide (SiC), Gallium Nitride (GaN), Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Indium Phosphide (InP).

These high performance wafers are ideal for research, development and production in high-performance electronics and optoelectronics applications. They are defined as compound wafers because they are made of two or more elements, often from groups 3 and 5 in the periodic table.

Compound Semiconductor Wafer Material Options

The most commonly used compound wafer materials include:

  • Gallium and Nitride (GaN): Offered as single crystal or GaN-on-sapphire templates.
  • Silicon and Carbide (SiC): Grown via seeded sublimation, suitable for EPI layer growth.
  • Gallium and Arsenide (GaAs): III-V compound semiconductor wafers.
  • Indium and Phosphide (InP): III-V compound semiconductor wafers.

GaN, SiC, GaAs or InP – what’s the difference?

GaN Wafers are supplied as templates on Sapphire substrates, due to lower costs and flexibility on dopants. For example, Fe doped Semi insulating, undoped N type and Si doped N type are commonly supplied variants. These wafers are available in 50 mm to 200 mm diameters with a range of GaN thicknesses up to 20 um. The Hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE)-based method is used to grow the GaN layer.

SiC Wafers are grown by a seeded sublimation process. All grades are available in any quantity and with short lead-times. Our SiC wafers are available with a unique laser marked ID in the backside (C terminated face) of the wafer.

GaAs & InP Wafers are available in small to large lot sizes. GaAs & InP are compound semiconductor wafers that feature high electron mobility, making them ideal for high-performance electronic and photonic devices.
