Bonding of Magnets into Stator Housings

Increasingly, magnets used in electric motors are adhesive-bonded rather than using conventional mechanical joining methods.

What do Magnet Bonding Adhesives do?

Electric motors are becoming increasingly compact, powerful, and efficient, especially in automotive and industrial applications. Adhesives play a critical role in enabling these advancements by replacing traditional mechanical fasteners and improving performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

Using adhesives gives the advantage of evenly distributing stresses (rather than concentrating them on the mechanical joint), reducing vibration noise, increasing corrosion protection, and eliminating of component damage during the joining process.

DELO MONOPOX epoxy adhesives offer excellent thermal stability up to 220°C, excellent chemical resistance, tension-equalising properties, and an increased gap-filling capability over mechanical joints.

Key Features of DELO MONOPOX

  • One-part epoxy adhesives that require no mixing
  • Curing temperatures from 60°C
  • Excellent temperature and chemical resistance
  • Very high strength adhesives

Why Use Adhesives in Electric Motors?

  • Automation-Friendly: Supports high-speed, repeatable application in production lines.
  • Stress Distribution: Adhesives distribute loads evenly, unlike mechanical joints that concentrate stress.
  • No Magnetic Interference: Unlike screws or rivets, adhesives do not disrupt magnetic fields.
  • Vibration Damping: Reduces noise and mechanical fatigue.
  • Corrosion Protection: Seals out moisture and contaminants.

Key Applications

  • Magnet Bonding: Permanent magnets are bonded to housings, rotors, or embedded within rotors using DELO adhesives. This ensures secure placement and high torque transmission.
  • Housing Sealing: Adhesives provide robust sealing between stator and housing components.
  • Sensor & Busbar Fixation: Ensures electrical and mechanical stability of auxiliary components.
  • Winding Protection: Encapsulation and fixation of windings for thermal and mechanical protection.

Performance Highlights

  • Temperature resistance: up to +220°C
  • Chemical resistance: oils, coolants, and cleaning agents
  • Mechanical durability: shock, vibration, and thermal cycling
  • Suitable for: automotive powertrains, industrial pumps, e-mobility systems
